Some advice for the heteros in order to avoid alienating their homo friends...
1. Please for fuckssake do not make us your token fag friends. We are your friends first and fags second. Try to remember that. Do not try to make friends with a gay person by announcing that you watch Will and Grace, or partake in some other similar homo stereotype. It's insulting.
2. Remember we're the 3rd wheel whenever we hang out with you straightfolk, try not to rub our faces in it.
3. Let us tell others about our sexual orientation, you don't need to do it for us. Generally we like to let others know about it on our own terms, even if we are open and honest about this fact of our existence. (Part of this is due to straight men and their frequent tendency to be uncomfortable or downright hostile, even if caution isn't necessary it at least gives some sense of control over the situation.)
4. Remember, not only are we far outnumbered in this country, we are in fact second class citizens who have been denied constitutional rights. There are more gay people killed in hate crimes than in all the race based hate crimes combined in this country. While you may live in a relatively accepting bubble of liberalism, the rest of the world is downright fucking hostile towards us. Don't make the alienation worse by constantly pointing out the obvious differences between us. We just want to lead normal lives with a minimum of finger pointing.
ok. enough said.
